Prior to the 1956 Melbourne Olympics - the first to be held in Australia and the first in the southern hemisphere - during the closing ceremony, the athletes marched by nation, just as they did in the Opening Ceremony. The flame is lit during the opening ceremony. It remains burning throughout the games, and is extinguished during the closing ceremony. This year it's about 17 days for the whole games. There's also the torch relay, which generally starts about 4 or 5 months before the games.poo
