William Fownes created the Church Pew Bunkers at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, established in 1903. Within an acre of sand, the famous Church Pews are formed by seven transverse grass mounds inside the enormous sand bunker. This creates a complex, devilish trap for any errant golfer. Fownes' intention was to make Oakmont the most difficult course in the world. He was famous also for raking his sand bunkers with a rake of long nails, before any tournament, to create deep and difficult furrows within them. This practice was discontinued in the 1960s.
