There is no exact date of course, but Lou Gehrig showed showed signs of the disease during spring training of 1939. At the start of the season, the condition worsened, Gehrig could hardly field groundballs. Playing in 8 games he got only 4 singles in 28 at bats which is about a .143 batting average.
