Tight is when you try to turn the car and it continues to go straight while the front wheels are turned. Loose is when the back of the car slides to the right when in a turn. Basically when you're tight you'll hit the wall with the front of the car and when you're loose you'll hit it with the back of the car.

What does it mean to be 'loose' in NASCAR?

>In Nascar "loose" means that the driver has to control the wheel more than when >it is tight. When it is tight the driver barely has to turn the wheel to get it to go >around the curve, as when it is loose you have to turn it more. Incorrect. Loose means the car oversteers, i.e., the car turns more than you expect and/or the rear end wants to come around so you have to countersteer. Tight means the car understeers, i.e., the front end doesn't want to turn or it turns less than you would expect with the angle you've turned the wheel so you have to steer more into the turn.

What does being tight mean?

Tight is a term that means the car doesn't want to turn in the corners. The driver will turn the steering wheel but the car doesn't turn as much as he/she thinks it should. The term is only used with corners/turns and not with the front or back stretch. Another word you will hear that means the same as tight is the word 'push'. Another term you will hear is 'loose' and that is the opposite of tight. Loose means the car wants to turn too much in the corner. The driver will turn the steering wheel and the car will turn more than he/she thinks it should. As with tight, the term is only used with corners/turns and not with the front or back stretch. Another word you will hear that means the same as loose is the word 'free'. When a tight car is in the corner it will seem as if the car wants to drift up to the wall. When a loose car is in the corner it will seem as if the car wants to spin out. Tight and loose are relative terms. Everyone sets their cars up differently. The 3 Car was always set up extremely loose, because that's the way Earnhardt liked it--you don't have to turn the wheel so much to get the car to go through the corner. Mark Martin probably likes a tight car; he steers by leaning his whole body into it, so a tight car would more closely feel like the old cars without power steering Mark learned to drive in. You can be tight or loose on the backstretch. It means your rear end got knocked out of alignment and you've got to keep the steering wheel turned to make the car go straight. This will wear you out.
