Japan: The island nation of Japan is by far the best performer in the region. Japan was the first Asian nation to host the summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964, and the winter Olympics in 1972 in Sapporo as well as in 1998 in Nagano. They've won a total of 367 Olympic medals - 335 in the summer Olympics and 32 in the winter games, bagging a total of 123 gold. At the Athens Olympic games India's solo win was a silver medal in shooting everyone from Finland to Cameroon left India behind. It's been nearly three decades since India took home a gold. PriceWaterhouseCoopers expects India to bag 6 medals during the Olympics. India's hopes are currently pinned on its Weightlifting, shooting and boxing athletes.

South Korea: South Korea hosted the summer Olympic games in 1988, in Seoul, the games when sprinter Ben Johnson failed the drug test. The country takes part in both the summer and winter Olympic games and has won a total of 215 medals in world Olympic history, - 184 at the summer games and 31 at the winter games - 72 of which were gold. South Korea's forte lies in handball, baseball and badminton. The country is expected to perform well at the Beijing games too.

North Korea: North Korea is sending 63 delegates by far its biggest delegation to the Olympics. The country has won 37 medals in Olympic history - a total of 35 at the summer games and 2 at the winter games. North Korea excels in weightlifting, football and table tennis and has won a total of 8 gold medals.

Thailand: Thailand has won a total of 17 medals at the summer Olympics, the country doesn't take part in the winter Olympics. Thailand's forte lies in boxing and weight lifting, sports in which they have won the most gold medals. Thailand has being displaying its sporting prowess only recently, it won 3 gold, one silver, and four bronze at the Athens games four years ago.

Pakistan: Known for their hockey and athletic skills, Pakistan has won 10 Olympic medalsstill date. They most recent win was in Barcelona in 1992, where they won 1 bronze medal. Pakistan has won 3 gold medals in Olympic history.

Vietnam: Vietnam excels in swimming, athletics and badminton. The country won 1 silver medal in Olympic history at the Sydney summer games in 2000.

Malaysia: Malaysia has won a total of 3 Olympic medals, the most recent being at 14 years ago at the Atlanta 1996 summer games. They haven't won any gold medals.

Indonesia: A great performance by a small country - Indonesia has won a total of 20 medals at the summer Olympics (it doesn't take part in the winter Olympics). The group of islands latest win was in Athens where they secured 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. The Indonesians are best at badminton, swimming and archery.

Philippines: The Philippines have won a total of 9 Olympic medals, no gold, 2 silver and 7 bronze. The last medal basketball crazy islands, won was a one silver medal at the Atlanta games in 1996.

Hong Kong: The city of this years equestrian events, Hong Kong has won 2 medals at the Olympics - 1 gold at Atlanta (1996) and a silver in Athens (2004). The city is known for its prowess in horse racing, swimming and badminton.

Taiwan / Chinese Taipei: Has a Olympic medal tally of 15 - 2 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze. Their most wins have been in recent years - where they bagged 5 medals at the Sydney 2000 games and 5 medals at the Athens 2004 games. Taiwan is best at softball, baseball and table tennis. This is the last year that both softball and baseball will be played.

Sri Lanka: The island country has won 2 Olympic medals one silver at the London games in 1948 and a bronze at the Sydney summer Olympics in 2000. The country excels in weight lifting and boxing.

Singapore: Singapore won their last Olympic medal in Rome in 1960. Their sports people excel in badminton, table tennis and swimming.

Cambodia / Myanmar/ Laos / Brunei / Bangladesh / Maldives: All of them come to the Beijing Olympics with great hopes. They have never won an Olympic medal before. If sports people from these countries do qualify, they will be represented in swimming, athletics, archery, shooting and swimming.
