Kim Yuna
The ladies' single (figure skating) world record was the the most significant record broken at the 2010 Olympic games. Kim Yuna of South Korea broken the then world record in the short program, free skate, and total.
The controversy that existed when Kim Yuna lost the gold medal in the 2014 Sochi Olympics to Adelina Sotnikova was about the technical marks awarded to Sotnikova even after stumbling a number of times.
Yuna Kim (Westerners reverse the two names) is the first South Korean skater with an international presence, and she won gold at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. Yuna Kim broke records in the short program, long program and overall competition; in all cases she broke her own records. In the long program, she finished 18.34 points ahead of her nearest competitor, Mao Asada. Yuna Kim's overall score was 228.56. This is an enormous number, but the sport is progressing so fast it may be surpassed sooner rather than later.
