I prefer white but you could use any color.
Many shooters prefer black tape since it hides the position of the puck on your stick blade making it harder for a goalie to anticipate the direction of your shot. Goalies usually prefer to use white tape so that the goal judge or the referee won't mistake the knob of the stick for a puck if it enters the net. (Goalies frequently make a rather large knob on the end of their sticks. It helps them not to lose it during a poke check and is also useful handling the puck while wearing a trapper.)
