From my experience, the most advantageous characteristics of a setter is knowing how your teammate wants you to set him up:

Fore example,

1. does he want it set close to the net or a few feet back to avoid it being blocked by the opposite team?

2. does he want it set well above the net to give him plenty of time to run up to it or can you time it just above the net as he's already in flight to spike the ball?

Another great characteristic to have is to always be conscious of where your teammate is on the court at all times so that you can set it to wherever he is, OR yell out simple commands that will tell him to get ready for your set by the net. The shorter and simpler the command, the better. I simply yell out, "Get up! Get up! Get up!" very rapidly to signal an immediate response and because it's easy to say quickly.

Hope this helps!

When should the setter get the volleyball?

When your talking about receiving that ball from a serve, then no. While setters may "get" the ball from a serve to save it from hitting the ground it is never their goal to receive a serve. In most cases, the back row players will receive the serve and try to bump it to the setter who will, in turn, set it to the hitter. In a real game, it doesn't always happen this way of course but that is the basic set up for volleyball play.

Is there a striker position in volleyball?

If striker means hitter...It_is_all_front_row_positions:P^ the previous answer is incorrect. There is no "striker" in volleyball. There is though a SPIKER, who can be either a middle or power, the three positions in volleyball are a setter, middle and power.Setter being the most important because they get passed the ball to set it up nice and high for either the power or middle to spike or send it over the net.

Can a backcourt player legally block in volleyball?

A back court player can not legally block. It is very rare that you will see this happen and even more rare that a ref will catch it. The most likely situation you will see this is when a setter comes out of the back row, there is an over pass that the setter tries to bring back on their side of the court, but an opposing player hits the ball into the setters hand.

A mixed economy features a "mix" of features from traditional economies, market economies, AND command economies--usually the most advantageous features from each.
