Say the ball was hit to the shortstop (6) and was thrown to the first baseman (3) for an out. You would write 6-3 inside the picture of the field, the write a 1 with a circle around it to record that an out had been made. If a player makes an error, lets say the shortstop, then it would be recorded 6e-3. It would only be recorded this way if the player made it safely to the base. If the player was still out it would no be considered an error.

An error. On a score sheet an error that accounts for a runner advancing any number of bases is marked as E_ where _ is the number of bases advanced.
The codes relate to the positions of the players, and do not designate the type of error made. 1 - Pitcher 2 - Catcher 3 - First Baseman 4 - Second Baseman 5 - Third Baseman 6 - Shortstop 7 - Left Fielder 8 - Center Fielder 9 - Right Fielder
For score-keeping purposes, every defensive position is assigned a number. This number has nothing to do with the number on the back of a player's uniform. The scoring numbers are: 1 -- pitcher 2 -- catcher 3 -- first base 4 -- second base 5 -- third base 6 -- shortstop 7 -- left field 8 -- center field 9 -- right field so a scoredcard reading, for example, "E-6", would mean an error on the shortstop.
