The skeleton discipline appeared for the second time in the Olympics in 1948. Skeleton was a form of luge and some called it tobogganing at the time. Nino Bibbia of Italy was awarded the gold medal, with American John Heaton taking the silver, and John Crammond of Great Britain being awarded the bronze.
