The Trinity River passes to the east of Houston. The Brazos River passes to the west of Houston. Various creeks (many of which are locally called "bayous") flow through the city. Among them, Armand Bayou, Brays Bayou, Buffalo Bayou, Clear Creek, Cypress Creek, Greens Bayou, Halls Bayou, Hunting Bayou, Sims Bayou and White Oak Bayou are the most widely-known. All of them are vulnerable to flooding and are the focus of ongoing flood control projects.
