There was a coach named Rick Venturi who served as interim head coach of the 1996 New Orleans Saints after Jim Mora was fired and the 1991 Indianapolis Colts after Ron Meyer was fired. Venturi's career NFL head coaching record was 2-17. As of the 2007 season, he is the linebackers coach for the St. Louis Rams.

Rick Venturi also spent three years as head coach at Northwestern University. His record there was 1-31-1.

Harvey Johnson went 2-23-1 in two stints with the Buffalo Bills, in 1968 and 1971. Of course, in 1968 the Bills were still part of the American Football League, so it depends on whether you're including the AFL in your answer.
