Goal Difference is an important statistic used in football, mainly to diffrentiate between 2 similarly placed teams. Goal Difference = Goals Scored - Goals Conceded.
Goals "For" are the ones your team scores. Goals "Against" are the ones scored against your team. The totals are used in tournament group play to determine tie-breakers if point totals are equal. So Goal Difference is Goals 'For' - Goals 'Against'

You take the amount of goals scored and subtract the amount of goals conceded and that gives you the goal difference. It can be negative or positive. It is used as a way of deciding the order of teams in a league when they have the same amount of points.
The most goals by one team in a period happened on Mar. 19, 1981 when Buffalo scored 9 goals against Toronto. Most goals by both teams in a period happened twice. A total of 12 goals was scored on Mar. 19, 1981 when Buffalo scored 9 and Toronto had 3. Also on Dec. 11, 1985, when Edmonton scored 6 and Chicago scored 6.

As in on a league table? A method of separating two teams who are tied on equal points, they use goal difference. Goal difference is goal scored minus goals conceded, the teams at the top of the table usually have high positive goal differences and teams at the bottom usually have high negative goal differences.
