Webb Ellis made up Rugby by picking up a football and kicking it over the cross bar. That is why the world cup trophy is called the webb Ellis cup.
It was first developed in England - In 1823, during a game of soccer at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England, 16 year old William Webb Ellis, in fine disregard for the rules, picked up the ball and ran with it.
William Webb-Ellis from Rugby (the town) school in England. Whilst playing football he picked up the ball and put it over the goal line. this is where holding the ball and putting it over the line came from. The word try came from whe William put the ball over the line he said to the official 'was that a goal sir?' and then the official replied 'no but it was a good try'. A spectator watching thought that this could be made into a game and re made the rules and called the game Rugby from its founded area. William Webb-Ellis is well known as he is the full name of the rugby world cup 'the William webb-Ellis cup.'
William Webb Ellis was playing football (soccer) for Rugby school and during the match he caught the ball in his arms (which was allowed at the time) and ran with it (which was not) the other players ran after him, trying to tackle him and the crowd loved it, later it became a sport. this is supposed to have happened in the latter half of 1823.
Whistle playing football in 1823, student William Webb Ellis of Rugby School Warwickshire, England 'caught the ball in his arms... and on catching the ball, instead of retiring backwards as was the requirement of that game being played, rushed forwards with the ball in his hands towards the opposite goal'. The code of football later known as rugby union can be traced to three events: the first set of written rules in 1845; the Blackheath Club's decision to leave the Football Association in 1863 and; the formation of the Rugby Football Union in 1871. It has since been refined into the game we have today which has now two versions. The Union Code and of course the League Code.
The game had been played since 1823 when William webb ellis pickd up the ball and ran forward with it. However, the game as we came to know it had to formalised. that is rules made and writen down so ALL teams played to the same standards. The Rugby Football Union formalised that game, a job that was completed in June 1871. So since June 1871 the real game of Rugby was played.
The "Webb Ellis Cup" is named after the person reputed to have started the concept of rugby. William Webb Ellis. However, the cup itself was not made specifically for the RWC winners, it was actually made for another sporting event and had not been used in some considerable time so the cup was renamed and taken on by the RWC Ltd who stage the event then renamed for use within the Rugby environment.
