You can, if you feel it helps you. It is not totally necessary but it does help certain people. So, the basic answer would be 'Yes, if you like.'
Good luck in pointe:)
Padinis
ballet shoes - beginners wear soft ballet shoes and as you progress you move onto wearing pointe shoes. both these shoes come with either a full sole or a split sole. personally i prefer a split sole.
Any dance store should have them. But do not go to a grocery store to get ballet shoes, they are not the same. Any normal shoe store is a no-no also, if you want real ballet shoes you need to go to a dance store. YOu can also order them offline, I like to use discountdancesupply.com, but you have to order them so you cant try them on for that.
No. For pointe work you need to build strong arches with a full-sole. Split-soles are best used only for professionals and performances.
There are many different types... the ones i know of and i use are tap shoes - oxford style jazz shoes - you can get split sole or full sole, you can also get jazz trainers which you can wear for any style ballet shoes- basic ballet shoes, pointe shoes
you start with just simple ballet flats, usually made from canvas. can be split soled. then you progress to demi pointe's which help to build up ankle support and get you used to the feeling of boxes and then pointe's. very hard! :)
To be a Master of split takes a long time . You can master a split for 1 year if you practice everyday. If you have a ballet or gymnastic lessons for at leat 3-6 years for sure can do split but not a master of it. If you graduate ballet for sure you can do master split .

Some gymnastic moves are derived from ballet, yes. {e.g. A 'split leap' is called a 'grand jeté' in ballet}
No, you don't have to learn ballet first to do a split. Its just a matter of how flexible you are, you just have to do a lot of stretching to make yourself more flexible.
In ballet, you do not necessarily have to be able to do the splits. Now, you will most likely be required to do them if you are in a professional company or professional show.
The sentence "I wanted to go to the ballet I was forced to go to the basketball game" is a run on sentence. It should be split into two sentences, or joined with a conjunction.
