Yes, that's what Karate or any other martial art for that matter, exist for. But again, you are your own judge, evaluate whether your art is good enough to defend yourself. Can you take on multiple people in a fight if the situation arises? If, yes then good. But is it worth it? Is there any way you can handle the situation without hurting anyone or yourself.
Remember, karate is for defending yourself with minimum damage possible. It's not to show unnecessary aggression, however cool it may seem. If there's a possibility to flee, don't ignore it. It doesn't make you small or something but shows that you more mature than the attacker.
