The term put out simply means the player who makes the out final. For example, on a ball hit to short, the short stop fields and throws to first for the out. The short stop is credited with an assist and the first baseman with a put out. Also, on a strike out, the catcher is credited with the put out and the pitcher with an assist.

It is essentially an out. If it is a fly ball the player catching it receives a put out. If a ground ball and the player throws the ball to first, the player throwing receives an assist and the player catching and tagging the base before the runner receives the put out.

A putout is the term for getting a batter or runner out. An unassisted put out happens when only one fielder is involved, such as when an outfielder catches a fly ball, or the first baseman grabs a ground ball and touches the bag. An example of an assisted put out would be a ground ball that's fielded by an infielder who throws the ball to the first baseman.

it is when a player fields the ball, and then makes an out at a base without any help (ie, not throwing the ball, rather, playing the base themselves)

Is a pitcher or catcher credited with a putout on a strikeout?

The pitcher is credited with a strikeout. The catcher is credited with the putout, unless the batter-runner has to be retired at first base with a throw from the catcher.
