2001
He had his first name on his Jersey in the Japanese Baseball league so the MLB let him keep it on.
Edgar Martinez had 2247 career hits for the Mariners, making him the all-time leader. Ichiro Suzuki currently has 2244 career hits for the Mariners, following the end of the 2010 season. Ichiro will presumably become the new all-time leader by the end of the first week of the 2011 season. It should be recognized that Ichiro also had 1278 hits in Japan.
When Ichiro played for the Orix BlueWave in Japan in 1994, the manager assigned him a uniform with his first name on the back. It was a move designed to promote more interest in the team. As it happened, Ichiro made a huge name for himself by becoming the first player in Japanese baseball to accumulate more than 200 hits. When Ichiro joined the Seattle Mariners in 2001, he continued the practice of wearing his first name on the back of his uniform.

Ichiro Suzuki
Ichiro Suzuki made his Major League debut with the Seattle Mariners, on April 2, 2001 against the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field, Seattle. Ichiro had two hits, and scored a run in 5 at bats. His first Major League hit came in the bottom of the 7th inning, a line drive single to short center field off Athletics pitcher T.J. Mathews.
In Ichiro Suzuki's country, one's first name is considered their family name or surname, so Suzuki is his personal name. Following our tradition of putting the family name/ surname on the jersey, like Ramirez or Smoltz, he put Ichiro on his jersey.

Ichiro Suzuki
You must not know very much about Ichiro. #1 he is the best Japanese baseball player to ever play in the United States of America. #2 he is absolutely amazing the way he flys around the bases and gets 200+ hits every season. #3 he is an incredible human being, he respects his equipment, teammates, coaches , and just everything so much. Once he threw his bat to the side, not very hard, after being walked and he apologized to the maker of his bat. (He gets all his equipment specially made.) He also is the only player in the USA to wear his first name on the back of his jersey. He dis this because in Japan, Suzuki is a very popular last name, and he wanted to be unique.
