At the start of the game you actually have 3 options if you win the toss...1. Receive the ball, 2. Kick the ball, 3. Defer to the second half (note: although a choice...choosing to kick in the first half is not recommended. By making a choice to kick, the other team then gets the same choice in the second half...which most coaches (minus Marty Mornhinweg...see Detroit vs. Chicago 2002 OT game) will choose to receive the ball. So in essence you would be kicking twice. If you choose to defer, ultimately you are postponing your decision until the second half. Hope this helps...
