For example, if a pitcher comes in to start the seventh inning, gives up two base hits and is replaced without recording an out, the box score will show he pitched 0 innings. At the bottom of the box score it will have a statement "<name of pitcher> pitched to two batters in the seventh inning'. Sometimes you hear broadcasters refer to it as 'plus'. Say the starter is replaced after giving up a base hit in the seventh inning but before recording any outs. You might hear the broadcaster say "<name of pitcher> went six plus innings today".

What does the IP stand for in softball?

IP stands for Innings Pitched. It is a pitching statistics that records the amount of innings the pitcher pitched. It can be divided into thirds by the outs that were recorded while the pitcher was still on the mound. For example: Its the 5th inning and there are 2 outs. The pitcher needs to be taken out of the game and is replaced with another pitcher. The number of innings pitched for this game would be 4 2/3. The relief pitcher would then pitch 2 1/3. This would add up to the complete 7 inning game.

Can you replace a pitcher after pitching to a batter?

Yes. A pitcher may be removed and replaced by another at any point during a defensive half inning, regardless of if the pitcher has commenced an at bat or not. ---------- Above answer is not completely correct. The starting pitcher, and any replacement pitcher, must pitch to at least one batter before that pitcher can be removed...except due to injury or illness.

Who is charged with the loss if the team loses in the 9 th inning?

Which ever pitcher is responsible for the runner who scores to lose the game. Say pitcher A gives up a double, and is then replaced by Pitcher B. If pitcher B gives up another double, and the runner on second scores, Pitcher A gets the loss, because he put the scoring runner on base.

What is illegal pitcher?

A team has to predetermine and release it's roster before game day. A pitcher that is not assigned to that particular roster cannot come in the game. Another situation that can make a pitcher ineligible is if he were to come out of the game at any point; once a pitcher is replaced (on the mound, at the plate, or on the bases) he cannot return for the remainder of that game.

Is a pitcher who doesnt get an out in the first inning and is pulled from the game is he still considered the starting pitcher?

A pitcher who doesn't get an out in the 1st inning and who is pulled from the game is still considering the starting pitcher. He will be listed this way on the team spreadsheet and roster.
