The perks an American Olympic athlete receives include free travel, accommodations, and clothing. The other perk is the fame and recognition one receives from being on television.
It depends on the country. Most Olympians are paid by their government. US Athlete's are not, in fact, US athletes are volunteers. They make money through sponsorships, endorsements, and in some sports prize money. Unfortunately that can add up to be a boatload of cash or not much at all depending on the sport and the individual athlete.
For the 2012 London Olympics, the torch traveled 8,000 miles. It passed through 1,000 cities in 70 days, including Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Belfast, Aberdeen, and Newcastle.
