A horse named Wintergreen was the winner of the 1909 Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby winner that had to be put down is Barbaro, who won the race in 2006. He suffered a severe leg injury during the Preakness Stakes shortly after his Derby victory, leading to multiple surgeries and a prolonged battle for recovery. Unfortunately, despite the efforts to save him, Barbaro was euthanized in January 2007 due to complications from his injuries. His tragic story highlighted the challenges of equine health and welfare in racing.
