Common 9oz through 20oz CO2 bottles cost less than $20 each online. They are always shipped empty, and they cost $3-$6 to refill. They are good for five years then they will need to be hydrotested, with the exception of 9oz, or any bottle with a diameter smaller than two inches.
Compressed air gas bottles, on the other hand, cost significantly more. Cheap, low pressure steel bottles cost as low as $35, where high end, high pressure carbon fiber bottles cost up to $190.

CO2, stored in the tank is highly pressurized. The paintball being shot is caused by it being pushed out by the rapidly expanding gas. CO2 also cycles and reloads the next paintball.

Paintball hurts MUCH more than airsoft. The reason that Paintball hurts more than Airsoft is because the speed of the paintball is faster and the mass is also larger. Take an Airsoft BB and a paintball and look at the difference in size. Now, when you figure that Paintball markers have much greater speed than an Airsoft gun, you will find that Paintball will and should hurt more.
