The device used in pole vaulting to lift the participant is called a "pole." Athletes use a flexible pole, typically made of fiberglass or carbon fiber, to propel themselves over a high bar. The pole acts as a lever, converting the athlete's forward momentum into vertical lift as they vault over the bar.
The high jump and pole vault are both track and field events focused on jumping over a horizontal bar, but they differ significantly in technique and equipment. In the high jump, athletes leap over the bar without any assistance, using their own strength and technique to clear the height. In contrast, pole vault competitors use a flexible pole to propel themselves over the bar, allowing them to achieve greater heights. Additionally, the approaches and landing areas for the two events differ, with pole vault requiring a landing pit and high jump typically utilizing a cushioned mat.
In "olden" days, poles might have been made out of aluminum, which is pretty much the same material as the bar that vaulters try to vault over. However, nowadays vaulters use poles made of fiber-glass, which is much lighter and more flexible. Pole lengths may vary, but the minimum is usually (unofficially) around 12ft. and the max depends on the height you are attempting to vault over.
