1938.The 1938 Orange Bowl was Michigan State's first ever bowl game. They lost to Auburn, 6-0.
As of the 2008 season, the University of Michigan currently has the longest consecutive bowl appearances streak with 33 (1976-2008). Nebraska holds the all time record at 35 (1969-2003). That will stand for at least another 10 years unless Michigan wins every remaining game on their schedule this year, and then gets invited to a bowl at 6-6. Very doubtful.

Despite appearances in Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XXXIX, the Eagles have yet to win the title game.
Florida State has been in 28 straight bowl games, with a record of 19-7-1 in the last 27 games. The Gator Bowl on 1/1/2010 will be the 28th straight and final bowl game for Bobby Bowden. Also, Nebraska made 45 consecutive bowls from 1969 to 2003. The streak lasted from Bob Devaney to Frank Solich, who did not coach the 2003 Alamo Bowl (Bo Pelini did and beat Michigan State 17-3). Michigan went to bowl games from 1976 to 2008, making 33 straight. Ohio State went to 26 straight Bowl games from 1972 to 1998, that ended when John Cooper went 6-6 and failed to make a Bowl. I do not know the 5th team, but I hope this is a good start. GO BIG RED!!
Alabama has the most bowl appearances all-time. Tennessee is second. Top five bowl appearances all-time as of Jan. 07, 2008. 1. Alabama 56 games 2. Tennessee 48 games 3. Texas 48 games 4. USC 47 games 5. Nebraska 44 games
As of the end of 2007, Alabama holds the NCAA record for most bowl appearances (55) and bowl victories (31)...The Crimson Tide have posted a 31-21-3 all-time record in their 55 bowl appearances.
