Evidence of a ditch may help determine if a mound is man-made. Unfortunately, since the mound in question is in New York City, evidence of a ditch has long ago been obliterated. I remember reading that evidence of a Native American burial mound was found in the late 1800s and that it was verified by archaeologists before the street was paved over.
