Lou Gehrig knew about his illness and went out holding his head high. There was no controversy for him. He remains 'The Pride of the Yankees'. I would imagine that others, such as Stephen Hawking, gather inspiration from Gehrig's speech and use it to lift them up when they consider what they must face in life. Gehrig was a fighter. He refused to hold his team back and retired from Baseball rather than be less than he could be. I admire Hawing as much because he has remained productive mentally as his body has deteriorated. Lou Gehrig set the standard for coping with ALS.
