the shifter should be located to the left around the footpeg. if it has a clutch then pull the lever in before each shift. the gear patter is usually one down then however many up. down is first, the up is second, etc. to shift down just push down and neutral is usually halfway up once ur in first gear.
My son just got one for Christmas, it is very hard to up shift from first gear, so far he hasn't been able to use his foot to lift up the shift bar, for now he is pulling it up by hand and starting to ride in 3 gear....we are hoping steel toed boots will help but the shift bar is really tight! 1 is down the rest are up....
otherwise it runs great and he is have fun with it.

Depends a little on what kind of hubs you have, but on a healthy bike the gears should engade pretty immediately after a shift. If they don't, something probably needs to be adjusted or lubed.
