It depends what you will be using it for, for example, if you were using the laptop to do some video editing, then you would look at the size of the memory (RAM) so that you could smoothly run some HD footage (I dont see why anyone would buy a laptop for video editing to do SD). You would also have to look at the size of the HardDrive, you can get over 1 TB on a laptop which is big but can be expensive. If you just wanted the laptop to talk to friend via FaceBook or MSN and do some webcam chats/video chats then you would just look for a simple machine capable of running the internet and wouldn't really need much RAM or a big HardDrive, if you also need it for college/school work then something decent but don't blow all your money on the next shiny thing shoved in your face look around and decide what you need. If you really want to video edit I personally wouldn't buy a Mac unless my work required me so or to use one, but a Mac could be the right thing for you, some people even use them when they don't even do video editing.
