It has happened 18 times in the history of Major League Baseball. The last time was on July 21, 2012, when starting pitchers Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants and Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies hit home runs off each other. They both homered in the third inning of the game played at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. Cain hit his sixth career homer -- a solo shot -- in the top of the inning. In the bottom half, Hamels blasted his first-ever major league homer, also with the bases empty. The Giants won the game in 10 innings, 6-5.
No pitcher has ever hit 2 home runs in one World Series game. Bob Gibson and Dave McNally are the only two pitchers to have hit 2 home runs in their World Series careers.
Pitchers intentionally walk batters during a game to avoid facing a strong hitter who has a high chance of getting a hit or hitting a home run. This strategic move is used to control the game and minimize the risk of giving up runs.
