No. It is dangerous to do so. You could hurt any number of body parts, e.g. abdomen, internal organs, shoulders, elbows, wrists. A skier uses poles for timing, balance (although more a function of the hands, per se) and "blocking" in short radius turns. Never use poles to stop.

It depends on alot of things for example, how good are you, if you have just started you shouldn't use poles and some freestyle skiers don't use/like them but they are a huge help in all mountain skiing, I personally like poles.

Skier bash their poles together before a race, so that they get the snow out of their baskets in the pole. Also bashing your poles together can get the skier "pumped up". It a way to get the adrenaline pumping through you body.
