It is very naive to think that professional footballers don't swear at the ref. Whenever a decision goes against them, they end up swearing and blinding. Even though referees should send players off for offensive, insulting or abusive language, it takes place on such a frequent basis that the game would become a farce if the ref took appropriate action everytime he was sworn at. In one high profile example, Wayne Rooney hurled the F-word at one unfortunate referee nearly 50 times in one match. It must stop, and this is one aim of the new Respect initiative, as laid out this season by the FA.
