Sports in the 19th century were rough contests played by rough men. They did all kinds of things in the dugout, on the field or anywhere else around the ballpark including cussing, fighting, smoking, drinking and eating. Much of this bled into the 20th century. Today, minor leaguers are banned from chewing tobacco. You will see strange things on major league diamonds that you won't see in other sports, such as, laughing and joking and holding long conversations with opponents, chewing tobacco and eating on the field. Players still fight and cuss and yell at each other and the umpires. Somehow it is acceptable in sports but viewed as crimonal assault and battery elsewhere. It is hard to comprehend especailly since sportsman have always been heros to kids.
