Compensatory draft picks are awarded to teams by the NFL thourgh a formula created by the NFL Management Council based on a team's free agents and the postseason honors, salary, and playing time the free agents received. This formula is proprietary and no one, other than higher up NFL folks, knows what it is. However, if a team loses more free agents than they sign they will be awarded at least one compensatory pick. All compensatory picks are awarded in rounds 3 through 7 and these picks may not be used in trades.
