Well there are various Triathlons and Distances for Various ages. If you were young 5-8 you would consider doing Duathlons ( Run / Bike / Run ) or Aquathlons ( Swim / Run). Doing all those would give you Stamina for a Triathlon.
If you are an Adult 20-100 you should Do training for Both Disciplines and Get yourself a Beginner entry Road bike then a Tri Bike as you are confident and progress. The distances are to be Chosen by your knowledge of your Physical Capability.
There is no Age limit on how old you have to be but there has to be Rules about what distances you go in especially for the little ones.
If you are a Competitive Junior ( Enticer ) you will need your Gears Locked out by your Local Bike shop Specialists as you are not allowed to use the Big cog .
