Athens, Greece
The olympic games were originally held in Greece around 300 BC they were sportong events held every few years for the enjoyment of their gods, these Olympic traditions died out soon after the Roman invasion of Greece but the were brought back fairly recently in a small town called Much Wenlock in Shropshire near Wales, UK (the Paralympics were made in another town called Mandeville also in the UK) so that is why the London 2012 Olympic mascots are called Wenlock and Mandeville.
