The first 'cencus' or population count was undertaken in 1066 ordered by William the Conquerer. The Domesday books were produced so that William could tax people on the basis of how much they owned and what it was worth. The village in England where I live, in is in the Domesday Books. So that means my village has been here for over a thousand years! The Domesday Book was by no means the first record of life in England, Prior to that the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells the tale of a good 400 years before 1066, and the Romans recorded their conquest of the Celts long before that as well. The first recorded event on British soil is probably Caesar landing on the south coast of Britain. Prior to that, the Romans sent a ship to chart the waters and the shape of Britain (which they got hilariously inaccurate)
