In 1943, he petitioned to be admitted to the Officer Candidate School at Fort Riley, Kansas. The staff had a policy of refusing all black soldiers for OCS. Robinson appealed and eventually graduated as a second lieutenant. He was briefly part of the 761st tank battalion. He again challenged the color line by refusing to step to the back of a bus and eventually prevailed against charges by white officers.
