Lanterns can be used for decorating one's house or garden because many lanterns are pretty. I have a very pretty iron lantern in our backyard. It can hold a small candle. Lanterns are also useful if one will be camping outdoors or going to a place that has no electricity. As with candles, flashlights (also known as "electric torches"), oil lamps, and kerosene lamps, lanterns are good to have in case anything, such as a thunderstorm, causes one's home to lose its electricity. I live where there are many thunderstorms in the summer. Besides oil lamps and candles kept in case the electricity goes out, I have an old-fashioned lantern that has a metal top, bottom, and frames to hold 4 small panes of glass. There is a place to put a candle inside. The glass is to keep the wind from blowing out the candle.]
