The red lantern commemorates the lanterns hung outside the hoomes of the citizens of Nome who were waiting for medication to arrive from Juneau during an outbreak that affected many of the town's children. The medication was brought in by sleddog because the weather was too bad for flying. The Iditarod commemorates the brave run made by several mushers and dogs to reach Nome.
