Oleg Protopopov and his wife, Ludmila Belousova won Olympic Gold Medals in Pairs Skating in 1964 and 1968. They were World Champions four consecutive times (1965-1968) and also won four consecutive European titles. The musical piece most often associated with them is Franz Listz's Liebestraum. They are credited with having invented three types of death spirals and many transitional elements of pairs skating. As late as 2007, the couple, who were then in their 70s, skated occasionally in ice shows. Their performances were not at a competitive level, of course, but their conditioning, unison and musicality were still evident. In February 2014, the Protopopovs, as they are commonly known, attended some ice skating competitions at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
