The first woman to win the Iditarod was Susan Butcher, who achieved this historic milestone in 1986. She went on to win the race three times, in 1986, 1987, and 1990, becoming one of the most celebrated mushers in the event's history. Butcher's victories helped pave the way for greater female participation in the sport.

Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the 1,160 mile Iditarod race in 1985. The next woman to win the Alaskan 16-team dog sled race was Susan Butcher. Her first victory was in the following year in 1986. She went on to win four more times in 1987, 1988, and 1990. In 1989, she came in second. Overall she finished in the top five, 12 times. In 2008, the Alaskan government posthumouslydeclared the first Saturday in March to be "Susan Butcher Day". This coincides with the annual starting day for the Iditarod.
