1,2,2 defense. one guy spear heads the attacking team causing them to have little time to react and often make mistakes. the first pair will cut off passes and pick up the loose or misdirected pass. im not an expert that's just a general idea. it basically does what it says. it traps the team with the puck before clearing the neutral zone so they have little chance at getting shots on goal. some teams employ "trap busters". this skater will often loop back with the defense on his team when they have the puck. he loops back and charges forward with the most speed and probably, the puck. many fast players can break through the trap or cause enough trouble that he can outlet pass to someone else
