In hockey, offside is an infraction whereby a team on offense crosses the opposition's blue line before the puck does. The offside is only called if a player on offense touches the puck within the offensive zone; he may exit and re-enter the offensive zone to avoid the referee's whistle. Typically an offside is called if a player receives a pass that crosses into the offensive zone, carries the puck over the blue line without full control, or crosses the blue line before a teammate shoots the puck into the zone or carries the puck across the blue line.

After an offside, play is whistled down, and the face-off is moved outside the blue line.
