During the off season a sled dog will be fine on a high protein dog food such as: Momentum, Red Paw, Eagle Pack, Caribou Creek, etc.
Once the team is training again in the fall the dogs will have supplements to their food such as fish, beef, pork, chicken, mink, etc. It usually depends on what kind of meat is available near the musher.
Often times mushers will add corn oil or fish meal for a few more calories. During the Iditarod and Yukon Quest these dogs can burn 12,000 to 14,000 calories a day. It's definitely important to give them what they need when they need it.

Sled dogs have been used in the Arctic for at least 9,000 years and were important for transportation in Arctic areas until the introduction of semi-trailer trucks, snowmobiles and airplanes in the 20th century, hauling supplies in areas that were inaccessible by other methods.
