Pre-season begins in mid-September and regular season play resumes in early October.
Field hockey is a winter sport. This means in the northern hemisphere it goes from about September to March/April, and in the southern from March/April to around September. However, international games may be played at any part of the year and summer hockey often makes up a lot of the offseason.
In the NHL, the regular season ends in early April (this season all 30 teams play their final game on April 7th). The playoffs begin shortly after and 4 rounds of best of 7 play usually ends early to mid-June. (playoff schedule doesn't come out until later, but last season game 7 of the finals was June 15th, and regular season ended on April 10th).
Season 4 is currently underway (mid season-4). The season is usually 8-10 months, and a two month break after the main season is done, and then the pre-season. It usually goes by year, so Season 5 will be in January 2015.
Pre-season planning is when sports persons plan events prior to the onset of the season.
Pre-season sales are sales on new merchandise. A pre-season sale on winter coats may take place in August or September while a pre-season sale on bathing suits takes place in March or April.
