Figure Skating is classed as a sport and is recognised by the International Olympics Committee as being one!!
Figure Skating is the most popular winter sport to have axels.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) makes the determination of which sports are to be included in the Olympics. The International Skating Union (ISU) petitioned to have figure skating included as a winter sport and it was, in time for the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. For decades figure skating was the most popular Winter Olympic sport by far, but since 2010, TV audiences and streaming viewership of freestyle skiing and snowboarding have begun to outpace figure skating.
People have been ice skating for centuries. The first account of figure skating is in 1772. The first European championship was in 1891 and the International Skating Union was founded in 1892. Figure Skating was also first created by the Dutch in the 13 or 14 Century.
