20. For many years the top 20 split the prize money, and 21st got nothing. More recently, it has been spread down to the top 30, and all finishers receive $1049 from a separate source.

At the finish of the '95 race, John Gourley was in 19th place, when he took a wrong turn right outside Nome. Soon afterward, Ramey Smyth passed Mitch Seavey in the finish chute for one of the closest finishes in Iditarod history. Both thought they were racing for the final paying position, only to later find out they were 19th and 20th, and Mr. Gourley finished a short time later in 21st.
