How does a ski lift go slower at the top without slowing down the other cars?

These type of chair lifts are called high speed lifts, or detachable cables. Basically when the chair comes into the housing unit at the top or bottom the chair detaches from the cable so it can slowly move for loading and unloading. Then when it is about to leave the housing at the top or bottom it reconnects and zooms back to speed. The cable runs through a maze of pulleys so the chair can reattach back at the same spot.
