Most sleds have a brake, and the dogs are trained to obey directional commands.
Some of the most common forms of these commands:
"Hike!" = move faster
"On by!" = continue in a straight line, ignore whatever you were looking at
"Gee!" = turn right
"Haw!" = turn left
"Easy!" = slow down
"Whoa!" = stop
"Let's go!" = start moving
The people who control a dog sled are called mushers. They stand on the runners at the back of the sled and give commands to the team of dogs to steer and control their speed. Mushers must have good communication with their dogs and be skilled in navigating the terrain.
The Samoyed is both a clan of nomadic people in Siberia and the name of the dog they bred to pull their sleds.
